Australian Schools Let Companies "Teach" Makeup

I know that marketing in schools is nothing new, but a program in Australia is taking things to a new level. A program called Fashion Roll Call, which is sponsored in part by makeup brand NP Set Cosmetics, is touring all-girl schools around the country. Their goal is to educate girls in fashion and beauty industry careers by presenting a "lunch-time fashion parade" followed by makeup application tutorials taught by makeup artists who work for NP Set.

When I was 13, I probably would have been excited for this, since it means no class and playing with stuff my parents wouldn't let me wear. But as an adult, I have mixed feelings. The cosmetics brand is getting choice branding access to kids in exchange for a few makeup tips. And since this program is being billed as educational, and intended to teach children about the fashion and beauty industries, why no boys or coed schools? There are tons of men in the fashion and beauty industries, and their absence suggests that the informational element here is a thin veneer to make aggressive marketing more palatable. Thandie Newton never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, and last night was no exception. Her look at the 2012 premiere was incredibly simple and easy but with tons of impact. On her eyes, she paired a thin line of pewter eyeliner with a taupe eye shadow brushed from lash line to brow bone. Then, she dusted a sheer wash of coral blush from the outer apples of her cheeks up to her temples, and finished up with a bright red lipstick with complementary orange undertones. Michael Kors Makes a Very Hollywood Cosmetics Line

Designer and Project Runway judge Michael Kors is getting pretty with a new color cosmetics collection that's due in January. The makeup line, which was created in collaboration with Estée Lauder, is part of the Very Hollywood brand and is designed to be the makeup equivalent of Michael's recently released perfume. The collection comes in two palettes, a pink and a beige-coral, with complementary blushes, sheer lip "sheens," and eyeshadow kits for each. I liked Very Hollywood perfume well enough, and this collection, given the bright colors and sheer tints, seems to be marketed toward a younger audience than Michael's usual fare, but I just don't know whether I need a Michael Kors pink blush when there are already a million gorgeous shades out there. What do you think? Are you excited for this designer beauty debut, or just kind of meh?
