Last night at the London Film Festival, actress Amanda Seyfreid arrived on the red carpet with straight hair, (albeit with tonnes of body) for the UK Premiere of her latest film Chloe. Earlier in the day, she was spotted with co-star Julianne Moore with casual looking wavy hair. And just last month at the Toronto Film Festival, she promoted her flick with beautifully constructed retro-curls. I adore her thick and shiny mane, so to me, she can't really go wrong with any of these hairstyles. How about you, which look do you find most flattering on Amanda?

Best friends and former co-stars Lauren Bosworth and Lauren Conrad both appeared on the red carpet with the same hairstyle, but for different events. We first saw LC sporting this sleek, ultrastraight ponytail at her LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's line in Los Angeles on Thursday night, and on Saturday, Lo wore her hair a strikingly similar way to her birthday bash at Club Liv in Miami. At last night's New York City screening of The September Issue, a documentary about Vogue, Anna Wintour and what goes into putting together the biggest issue of the magazine, the crème de la crème of the fashion world rocked the red carpet. I don't know about you, but I especially loved this photo of Sienna Miller touching Anna Wintour. Doesn't it just make you feel uncomfortable to see someone warmly and openly engaging the model ice queen?

I also loved gawking at Georgina Chapman (Marchesa designer), Vera Wang and Bee Shaffer's shiny, long hair. They make straight look glamorous and enviable with evenly cut edges and a kind of body that only comes from what I have to guess is hours of mane maintenance. Seriously, it looks as though their hair has been spun from silk! No matter how many deep conditioning treatments I incur, my hair will never grow to be that long and look that healthy. Do you have any secrets for how to get luxe hair like Georgina, Vera and Bee?

What Makes Curly Hair Curly and Straight Hair Straight?

And wavy hair wavy? Well, as you may have suspected, it does have to do with genetics, but other factors influence hair growth as well. According to Proctor and Gamble, researchers do not completely understand why some hair twists and turns and some lays flat, but here are the most commonly accepted theories. Some are a little more scientific and others more commonsense.

Shape and opening of the follicle: If you have curly hair, your follicle is probably very flat in diameter. Straight-haired people have circular follicles. As for the wavy bunch? They have oval-shaped follicles.
The number of twists per unit length: Even the straightest of hair twists as it grows. The more twists, the more curl.
Humidity in the air: Hair, which is porous by nature, easily absorbs moisture molecules in the air, making the hair curl or frizz. Enough said.
Hormones and medication: Changes to the shape of the follicle caused by hormones and medication can alter the texture of your hair and the way it grows.
The position of the hair bulb in the follicle: The bulb is located at the bottom of the hair shaft. People with really curly hair may have a hooked end towards the bottom of the shaft, meaning their hair grows at more of an angle. Straight hair means little to no hook.
The number of disulfide bonds in the hair: Simply put, the way protein structures are arranged in each hair shaft effect how hair behaves. The more disulfide bonds that occur between hair proteins, the curlier the hair and vice versa. This explains why you can temporarily alter the texture of your hair with heat and/or water - just by breaking bonds.

Do You Still Straighten Your Hair?

With slightly fluffy, matte hair being on the beauty radar lately, suddenly super-shiny straight hair seems a bit last season. I have to admit that there is something WAG-ish about poker straight locks, especially when they're flat with no volume or bounce.

Having said that, I'm torn. I do love the shine that using straighteners brings to hair and whenever I see girls with glossy, straight hair in the street I'm more than a little jealous.

How about you, do you still straighten your hair?

Last Night a Hairbrush Saved My Life

Readers, I have fallen off the wagon. I have a strange desire (during this particularly humid week) to blow-dry my hair straight. I know it's not the best thing for my hair, but this time I got a reinforcement: I bought Conair’s Infiniti Tourmaline Brush ($12.99) after realizing I no longer even owned a round-barrel brush.

I've had blowouts in swank salons where they hold a round brush upright at the end and pull it straight down to create a perfect wave at the bottom of your hair. The spiral openings in this Tourmaline-infused brush some how make it possible to do that yourself, without getting one strand of hair caught on the bristles (OK, or handle. I have a lot of hair). Do you guys have a Holy Grail hair brush?
