It's no secret Britney Spears encountered a few stormy years along the way, but these days, she's looking better than ever. Last night, the singer took her boys to a Broadway show in NYC, sporting some heavier, parted-to-the-side bangs of the swooping variety. Of course, the great thing about midlength to longer fringe is that it can be easily swept away from the face to create a bang-free look. Even short bangs can be hidden with a little wax and/or pins. Trend Alert: Blond-Streaked Bangs

During her recent promotional tour for The Proposal, Sandra Bullock has been wearing her long, dark locks with a contrasting honey-blond streak on her fringe. Keri Hilson opts for the hidden placement technique, while Christina Milian goes for the bold with heavily highlighted bangs. By strategically weaving platinum strands under the bangs, the result is a versatile 'do that can be left both textured and funky or sleek and sassy. That, and it makes regrowth all the more subtle. One More Bang Trim Tip

You know those times in between haircuts, when you realize that you could use a little cleanup - but not a full-on haircut? You end up just letting it ride out until your next appointment comes around, cursing yourself for not taking up your stylist's offer for that midappointment complimentary bang trim.

I've got you covered on an appropriate compensation for the free service and a how-to for cutting them yourself. But in case you're able to make that midcut trip, consider actually booking your refresher trim before you leave the salon, treating it like a regular appointment, not just a "we'll see."

No more cramming to get in at the last minute, and fewer awkward hair days. One more thing? Although she gave the OK on emailing, my message, entitled "Bang Trim," got caught up in my stylist's spam filter. My guess is that the software wasn't liking the bang part. Oh, homonyms.

How Much Should You Tip For a Complimentary Bang Trim?

Every time I get my hair done (or is it did?), my stylist graciously offers me a complimentary bang trim in between services. "Call me anytime," she always says. Why I've never taken her up on her offer, I don’t know.

Even though I am pretty skilled at trimming my own bangs - or so I think - there is never anything quite like the precision cutting that my stylist can achieve. So, I'm taking her up on her offer this time around and popping in for that trim. This got me to thinking about what's a customary tip for a free service like this. So, I consulted one of my former stylists from the Chicago days, Veronica Rubio, owner of Salon V, to ask her opinion. She says:

Five dollars on the low end, ten dollars on the high end, judged on the level of regular haircut price. It's usually 10 percent of the regular haircut price.

And there you have it.

Tips For Trimming Your Own Bangs

Kevin Mancuso is on a roll. Not only was the Nexxus Creative Director nice enough to share recession-proof hair color tips, he recently styled Natalie Portman's hair for the Oscars. Next up: his advice on trimming your fringe.

If women want to cut costs by trimming their own bangs, are there any good tips to ensure a good cut?

Women tend to only need one or two bang trims in between their full cuts. Since most salons offer their clients discounted (if not free) bang trims, I generally suggest leaving the cutting to the professionals. However, if you are dead-set on trimming your bangs at home, I recommend starting with dry hair. Separate out the front section of bangs that you want to trim and pull to a point in the center of your face. Twist the gathered hair three or four times. Cut straight across at the desired length. Try trimming on the long side at first to prevent over-trimmed, super-short bangs. The twisting will produce bangs that are slightly longer on the sides than in the middle and also give the ends a wispy look. The twisting also helps to prevent the over-trimmed look.
