Jennifer Lopez vs. Sean Combs: A Fragrant Battle of the Exes

Let the showdown begin! Sean Combs and Jennifer Lopez have each released fragrances in the past year: Jennifer's Deseo ($46–$56) and Diddy's Unforgivable Woman ($55–$75). It's not the first foray into the fragrance world for either, but with Deseo expected to make millions in its first year alone, and P. Diddy's nomination for a CEW award, these ex-lovahs both have a lot at stake. But whose scent is better? For a side-by-side comparison, read more.

The Ads	A scantily clad Lopez lounges in a hammock in a tropical locale. It's pretty, but haven't we seen this sort of thing before?	Big stud Sean is flanked by scantily clad women strewn across a bed, looking as though they've just engaged in some serious Diddy-diddlin'.	Diddy's ad seems like it belongs in a men's magazine of questionable pedigree. (In fact, his commercials were banned for being too racy). Jen's ad is just yet another glamour shot - nothing groundbreaking - but I'd rather be the woman in her ad than one of the women in Diddy's. So Jen wins, but just barely.
The Inspiration	"A midnight walk in Jennifer's flower garden just before a thunderstorm."	"The essence of sensuality that intoxicates the senses, that expresses what it is to be the unforgivable woman."	Prancing around in Jen's garden sounds a lot more enjoyable than being scolded with Diddy's unintelligible take on female sexuality. Lopez for the win!
Bottle	A faceted, angular turquoise glass with a gold top.	A traditional, minimalist light pink frosted bottle	J.Lo takes this one. Diddy's is unforgivably blah.
How it smells	Fruity and sweet with a hint of coconut.	Musky and spicy, with a strong note of Jamaican rum.	Diddy wins. His fragrance is slightly more complex, less sweet, and more daring - as long as you don't mind smelling a little boozy.

Jennifer Lopez Talks Deseo, Garden Time

In the new issue of Harper's Bazaar, Jennifer Lopez reveals a few details about Deseo, her eighth (!) fragrance. As she's already said, the scent was inspired by her garden. Usually I'd give it a big ol' yawn (and I can hardly imagine that Jennifer digs around in the dirt), but she sounds passionate about it.

On her work: "I'd just come from the studio with this long caftan on, no makeup, but I had all my diamonds and some wood jewelry. A wear mix of earth and glamour."
On her garden: "There's this smell in my garden. The wood of the stairs wet with water, the lemon trees, rosemary and lavender, and five different types of roses. The combination of these smells was the inspiration for the fragrance."
On rolling in cash: "I've been lucky that because of what I do as a performer, I've also been able to do stuff like fragrances that I love. I'll never look at it as a money thing. I'll always look at it as a creative outlet."

Hola, amigas. There's some exciting news from Jennifer Lopez. She's just announced that she's expecting... to launch her next fragrance, Deseo, in February 2008. Unlike her earlier scents, Deseo directly honors Lopez's Latina heritage, which I think is cool. In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, she said:

On building on her Latina roots:"I have a lot of synergy happening in my life right now that is taking me back to my roots and to everything that I'm about and how I was raised. This is what I really find my heart is into. It's the first time I have decided to use a Spanish word for one of our fragrances. We really look at where I am at in my life and what is important to me at that time. But the one thing that we have always concentrated on from the beginning is to be as truthful as we can."

On how the celebrity fragrance biz has changed:"The celebrity fragrance category is huge now and it's very competitive - it has changed a lot [since my entry into it]. I really had no clue what to expect when I created my first fragrance, but like every other artistic endeavor I do, I just listened to my gut and made sure that I expressed myself completely. I was lucky that I found the right partner with Coty - who encouraged my creativity and really brought my vision to life."
On creating Deseo:"The idea for the scent usually comes first. I always call up and say, I love this or I love that - get this candle or this flower that was in my garden. With Deseo, the inspiration came from a combination of smells in my own garden. So, I called up my friends at Coty and asked them to come take a walk through my garden with me so they could experience it. It was late at night so there was kind of a dew in the air and I took them to an area where there are these beautiful geranium flowers, orange trees, lemon trees, and all this stuff mixing together that was making this beautiful smell."

It doesn't surprise me that Jennifer is so involved in finding the right scents, since she seems... particular about what she'll wear. The fragrance will be out in February, right in time for Valentine's Day. But fans who have attended her tour with hubby Marc Anthony have already received a sneak sniff-because samples have been handed out at each stop. Jennifer Lopez Rolls Out a New Product

After spending a week abroad continuing to celebrate Marc Anthony's birthday and hanging out with Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves at Milan Fashion Week, Jennifer Lopez was back to work in the states this morning. She got all dolled up in white for the launch of her new fragrance, Deseo For Men, at Macy's in NYC. J Lo is no stranger to designing her own scents, but this is her first attempt at branching out to men - something tells us she's already got at least one loyal customer in Marc.

Which Lipstick Shade Do You Like Best on Jennifer Lopez?

Jennifer Lopez typically doesn't change the length or color of her hair often. She typically doesn't steer too far from a nudish pink lip, either. So, when Jennifer rocked a bright red lip yesterday at the launch of her new men's fragrance, Deseo, I was pleasantly surprised. Tell me, what's your favorite shade on Jennifer? Do you like when she sticks to her standard nude/coral palette, or do you prefer a bolder look?

Who Wore It Better? White Pleated Fendi Dress

Fendi's white pleated dress is so delectable, not one, but two actresses got their hands on it. Cameron Diaz first wore it to the Japan premiere of What Happens in Vegas with light pink pointy Jimmy Choo pumps and assorted gold bangles. Jennifer Lopez wore the dress to the fragrance launch of her new perfume Deseo. In a very JLo manner, the actress opted for jeweled sandals, hoop earrings, bangles, and red lipstick. Cameron played it flirty feminine while Jennifer pumped up the sexiness. Whose version wins?

Jennifer Lopez Works Hard, But Not For the Money

Jennifer Lopez is one of the hardest workers in show business, what with all her acting, singing, dancing and designing, but we also know that these days she's all about her privacy as an expecting mom. That doesn't mean she won't sit down for a high profile interview, like this one with Harper's Bazaar. She gushed about her 8th fragrance, Deseo, Marc and that battle of love vs. money. Here's more:

On her work: "Being an artist is about baring your soul. If you're not doing that, you're not creating anything worth anything. I always see myself as a performer first, so I will always want to make music, act in movies, even onstage."
On working for love, not money: "I've been lucky that because of what I do as a performer, I've also been able to do stuff like fragrances that I love. I'll never look at it as a money thing. I'll always look at it as a creative outlet."
On her husband Marc: "Marc is a really private person, and he's been singing onstage since he was really young. He made me realize you can be an artist, and have credibility and success, without your life being on public display 24 hours a day."

It is true that we see less of J Lo these days, but it's a welcome break after those years of seeing the ups and downs of Diddy, Ben Affleck and Jenny from the Block. Now we're settled in to sit tight and wait to see J Lo the mama.

J Lo's Growing Family

Jennifer Lopez has made another list. First, she was best dressed, and now she is one of People en Espanol's 100 Most Influential Hispanics. Once again, Jennifer is answering our burning questions about having kids. The public just can't get enough of the baby rumors whether it's that she is pregnant or that she's becoming a Scientologist to get pregnant. We know you all are predicting a J Lo baby in 2007 and it sounds like she may want that too. Here's more:

"I come from a strong family, so of course I want to have one," Lopez, 37, tells the magazine. "But," she adds, "I do have my own family: my immediate family, my husband and his children. I get to share in all of that. I am very lucky to have that."

Since she and Anthony wed in 2004, Lopez says her outlook has changed. "I have tried to calm down the past couple of years since I got married. I have actually grown as an artist and as a person. I realized that everything I was doing leaned towards my roots: (The movies) El cantante, Bordertown, Como ama una mujer and a perfume called Deseo (Desire)."

As a result, she says, "It's the most fulfilled I've been. The most content, the most at peace, the most settled that I've been in my whole life." But is there anything else – say, a few kids of her own – that could make her life even better? "You know," she says, laughing, "when you are as blessed as I am, you don't like to push it."
