Would You Embrace the Browless Trend?

Forget low-brow beauty. No-brow beauty could be the next big thing. Barely-there eyebrows are a reemerging trend. "Think of those looming images of Queen Elizabeth," noted makeup artist Pat McGrath told the New York Times.

McGrath, who was responsible for the no-brow look at the latest Balenciaga show and the light on the brows look at Prada, noted that perhaps it has something to do with the current financial state of the world. "The economic troubles we are facing now open people up to be more daring and willing to don cutting-edge looks," she explained.

Even the latest Givenchy print ad features the look, and it appears to be trickling down to the mainstream. "It’s unifying," fashion consultant Lauren Boyle told the newspaper. "There is an asexual element to no eyebrows. . . It’s an exercise in modernity." I can't help but be reminded of David Bowie's Aladdin Sane years and, of course, '90s model Kristen McMenamy. My eyebrows were a pair of unruly beasts, and no at-home tweezing could tame them. And unfortunately, my regular brow-maintenance person has raised her prices to a not-so-affordable $50 a pop. So last night, I trekked to Nordstrom to try out the Anastasia Brow Studio in the beauty department. There are many locations nationwide, but I'd never thought of going to one because, well, you're getting your brows done in the middle of a cosmetics department. (I like a little privacy.) Still, the $30 price was much easier to swallow, and there's a reason that Anastasia is known as the brow expert - so why not take a chance, live a little?

First thing's first: Yes, it is a little awkward to have your eyebrows shaped while shoppers mill about. (Someone's sad-looking boyfriend, stranded while his lady shopped, looked very confused by the brow-waxing process.) But after I got over that, it was smooth sailing. My esthetician expertly waxed, plucked, shaped, and highlighted my brows until they looked magazine perfect. I was mildly surprised that she, a pro, used Anastasia's brow stencils to guide her, but they worked so well that I am now going to use them to maintain the arch at home. Score one for Nordstrom.

Six Tips For Beautiful Brows

When plucking (or is it tweezing?) your eyebrows at home, do you get less-than-stellar results? Whatever your case might be, the Chicago Sun-Times has some great tips for achieving beautiful brows from Benefit Cosmetics' brow expert, Hillary Foote.

I think we've all experienced baldy brows from going overboard with the tweezers at one time or another. Find out what you need to do to avoid wimpy brows and discover six ways to create enviable arches when you read more.

Before tweezing: "Fill in your natural brow line with a brow powder or wax before you do any reshaping. Seeing a full brow will help you pluck only must-go stray hairs and prevent you from over-tweezing," says Foote. She recommends Benefit Brow Zings ($30) to get the job done.
On trends: Foote encourages sticking to what works for you, instead of following the latest trends. "Slightly thicker brows are better than too skinny, barely there brows," she advises. I agree.
Tweezer happy: If you happen to get a little too overzealous with that tweezer, just wait patiently for those brows to return. "Growing back your brow hair usually takes two to three months," Foote states.
Don't tweeze above: "Always tweeze hairs beneath the brow line, instead of along the top of the brow," Foote forwarns. "This prevents you from creating an over-manicured shape and ruining your natural arch," she adds.
Arch support: "Use brow filler to emphasize your arch, which you can measure by aligning a pencil along the side of your nose at an angle and pointing the end toward your iris. The tip of the pencil should point to your natural arch," Foote says.
Matchy-matchy?: Opt for a brow filler in a color that is one shade deeper than your darkest hair tone. "Avoid using a harsh dark pencil to draw any hard lines across the top of your brow line, which should look slightly soft and fuzzy," Foote advises. She recommends Benefit Instant Brow Pencil ($20).

Three Simple Things to Remember Before Eyebrow Waxing

Since I've been trying to stretch the time between waxes with tweezing, my postrecession scheduling earned me a "long time!" exclamation at the salon door. Call me extra aware but chatting with my esthetician revealed these three easy things to do before waxing . . . that can be equally easy to forget:

Lightly exfoliate. Some skin is sensitive to this process and you may see tiny pimples postwaxing. Before you go in, lightly exfoliate the brow area. This can help clear impacted follicles and remove dead skin cells for a clean slate.

Bare before beautiful brows. If you know you're going in for facial waxing, avoid wearing foundation or any liquid products that can interfere with the working wax. (I stopped in after brunch and my makeup needed to be removed – oops!)

Powdered down. You may notice your esthetician powdering your brows as she starts. The reason? It absorbs any excess oil or moisture. The drier the skin, the better the wax will adhere to it. So show up with clean, dry skin or lightly powder it yourself and save that step.

I remember my mom getting her hair done back in the day by my aunt, the entire family's resident cosmetologist. Toward the end of the hair-dye processing time, my aunt would always sweep a little of the color on my mom's brows to enhance their tone.

Fab and I are big fans of Camilla Belle, especially because she has bold, thick, and beautiful eyebrows. We love a thicker pair of eyebrows, but I'll admit that slimmer eyebrows can work, too. When it comes to you, do you prefer your brows closer to those of Peter Gallagher or Marlene Dietrich?
