At the 18th Annual Environmental Media Awards, Nicole Richie was all laid back and natural with her delicate French braids wrapped like a headband. If you're feeling this sexy, bohemian style, I've got the how-to below. And for another hippie-esque take on the look, try out Sarah Michelle Gellar's more twisty, less braidy updo from earlier this year.

Slightly dirty hair is easier to work with than freshly washed hair, but you can create "day-old" hair with a texturizing product. Lightly sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion ($23) on the roots, working through to ends.
Next, part hair down the middle, stopping right before the crown area.
On one side, start French braiding. Gather pieces of hair as you move down, wrapping around to the opposite side, stopping before the ear. Hold together with a clear elastic band ($3.99). Don't worry about loose ends. Leave them for later.
On the other side, French braid — still gathering pieces as you go down, wrapping around to the opposite side like before. Focus on hiding the clear elastic band from your previous braid by tucking and intertwining loose ends from this braid. Use bobby pins to secure. The whole look is earthy, so be creative. The more you weave pieces from each braid together, the more organic and "flowy" it will feel.

If we were talking chakras, the sixth one (or third eye) is considered the center of wisdom and intuition. In certain Eastern and Western traditions, this chakra is located right between the eyebrows, and carries mystical meaning. When stimulated, this chakra (or energy center) opens up the doors to the subconscious. Ahhh.

But, if we're talking third eyes in the makeup realm, we're looking at something completely different. To achieve some self-enlightenment on your own, follow my few simple tricks to enhance the best features of your eyes.

Look at your pretty eyes straight on in the mirror. Generally speaking, well-proportioned eyes have one eye length in between. If there is more than one eye length, your eyes are probably wide-set. If there is less than one eye length, your eyes are probably close-set. Which do you have?

If you want to recreate Solange's nails at home, here's what you'll need:

Black nail polish (try Sinful Colors [$1.99] in Black on Black)
White nail polish (like Sephora by OPI [$9] in A-ha! Moment
Top coat and base coat
Wooden toothpicks

After painting nails with a base coat, paint them with black or white polish. (For the white polish, you'll need two coats.) Then, dip a toothpick into the opposite color. Carefully place a drop of the polish on your nail, repeating until you have the pattern you want. Let nails dry for up to 30 minutes, then seal with a top coat. Easy!

How-To: Fake a Brow Wax

Sometimes it only takes one glance in the wrong mirror to decide my brows are out of control and something must be done about them immediately. Brow kits are smart, but you may be at a loss about what to do with multiple shades of powder and a pan of wax or not want to mess with those tiny tweezers. Here are some no-pluck tips for the novice using tools you probably already have.

Brush brows up and to the right with a clear brow gel. Don't have any? Use hairspray and a toothbrush (preferably a spare).
Put some concealer on your middle finger and trace around the outline of your brows. You can't conceal an errant hair per se, but increasing the contrast between your skin and your eyebrow hair can work wonders.
Find a shade of shadow the color of your brows with no shimmer. Fill in lightly, ideally with an angled brush. If the color looks too dark, follow by pressing on loose powder with a puff.

I've been a nail-biter for two solid decades and what remains of my once elegant hands are so very sad. My nail beds are short and stumpy and my cuticles are pink, jagged and puffy. Every year I make a resolution to stop gnawing my nubs, and this time I'm going to do it. If you're wondering how to keep your hands healthy and looking their best, here are a few tips to help you along the way.

A nail should ideally have smooth skin folds (the area around your nail), flesh-colored cuticles (not raised or puffy) and a white lunula (half-moon shape at the bottom of your nail bed). Nails should also be consistent in color and free of horizontal ridges and dents. If your nails have any of these conditions, it could be indicative of illness.
White spots on your fingernails are OK. They are caused by injury and will typically grow out. However, red, black, green and yellow spots should be brought to the attention of a physician.
Avoid picking at your cuticles. This can lead to cuts and infection. Have a manicurist push them back manicures with clean tools (you don't want to contract a fungus).
Moisturize your cuticles and nails often. Whenever possible, apply a hydrating cream and wear white, cotton gloves before bed (as a deep conditioning treatment).
Short, square shaped nails (with rounded edges) are the easiest to maintain. Keep them covered with a hardener, polish or treatment that is free of toluene, DPB and formaldehyde. Also, I recommend an acetone-free polish so you don't dry out your nails and cuticles.
Did you know that nails grow around 0.1 millimeters a day? This means that your nails take about four to six months for full re-growth. So be patient if you don't see results instantaneously.

DIY Spa Treatment: Sunscreen

When I first stumbled upon this recipe for DIY sunscreen, I was a little wary because the SPF factor is unclear. But, after researching zinc oxide, I've come to find out that it is the best absorbent of both UVA and UVB light and it is photostable (meaning its chemical breakdown is unchanged upon sun exposure). The good news is that the SPF factor is quite high. The bad news is that it leaves a white mark wherever you apply it.

The original recipe doesn't call for an essential oil, but I've tweaked it a bit. I really like the way that just one drop of a powerful botanical oil can cover up that zinc smell. My pick is peppermint, but I'd also recommend rosemary or lavender. Here's what you'll need:

1 tbsp zinc oxide

1 1/2 tsp light sesame oil

1 tbsp rosewater

1 drop essential oil of your choice

Hot oil treatments are a fast and easy way to help restore elasticity, shine and moisture in dry, over-processed hair. They should instantly make your hair look and feel healthier, and they can be done anywhere from once to twice a week depending on the condition of your hair. I found this at-home hot oil treatment recipe from the Long Locks Hair Care Cookbook and have been eager to test it out.

Although I haven't tried this exact combo of ingredients yet, I have created a wonderful DIY treatment from a blend of jojoba oil, avocado, geranium oil and soybean oil. I loved the results, but found it to be fairly messy — and I didn't love the feeling of mashed-up avocado in my hair. That being said, feel free to add in fresh avocado, or a little jojoba oil if you desire. This recipe is simple, neat (you can bring it right into the shower with you) and it doesn't require a ton of ingredients. You'll need:

1/2 cup of soybean oil

8 drops of sandalwood oil

8 drops of geranium oil
